Sub Inventory Template Home
Sub inventory is basically a subset of normal inventory (parts or items). This is not required but does offer some great benefits. This section may also be called parent/child inventory. Originally, it was called sub inventory and cost controls. The key factor is the relationship between the main or parent item and the child or sub item.

Here is an example to help you get your head around it. Say you have some Snickers candy bars. That would be the parent or main item. What if you got some for a really good deal or some that were special in some way. You would want to differentiate between normal snickers bars and the new child or sub package. This is where sub inventory attributes come in. You could technically keep track of cost differences, prices, special descriptions, lot numbers, batch numbers, expiration dates, or any other sub attribute that you wanted to track.

Once again, this is not required, but allows you to go to crazy deep levels for tracking your inventory. This section helps you setup the special sub inventory attributes or category templates. These are basically the custom fields that you choose or want to track. They can be of four main types - numeric, dates, preset look-up menus, or simple text fields.

The section you are dealing with shows part/item categories and any sub or child attributes that have been assigned. Use the edit link to go deeper into each part/item category. From the next page, you will be able to setup the rules and default for each field (sub inventory attribute). Here is the help file for that page.

If you are looking for a higher level attribute, please check out the section called parent attributes. These parent attributes are not limited to a single part/item category, like sub inventory attributes are. See this help file for information about parent attributes.

Pro tip: If you are going to track subs and packages separately, this is for you. If you are planning on putting everything in a bin or on a shelve and not labeling it (as a sub or sub package), you may want to stick with just normal parent inventory. Sub inventory and cost controls is tighter, but it also takes a little bit more work. Just a heads up. enjoy!
